Hunger is a reality that far too many children face. It is commonplace for most children in Uganda to receive just one meal a day, but this week we got a distress call from one of our foster mothers. She was crying as she told us some of the homes had gone two days with not even a single meal and she expressed her concern for the children who were becoming weak. With the dry, hot weather, no one has been able to grow or harvest anything lately. Sleep didn’t come easy that night. We contacted some of our sponsors the following day to ask for prayers and see if anyone had any ideas or funds to help before any of these sweet children went even one more day without food. Four sponsors from the United States came through and sent funds within the day. As the children were going through their 3rd or 4th day without food, we were able to go to the market and buy 300k (roughly 661 pounds) of maize (dried corn), that we then took to the mill to be ground.
Once the maize was ground we headed to the homes in need of food to distribute to all the mothers and children.
A big thanks to those who donated in this moment of emergency! We hope and pray that we will receive more sponsors soon so that these children won’t have to go through so many times of only have one meal a day or even dealing with days with nothing. To those who live far away, you can only imagine how difficult these times are as these children walk miles in the heat each day to fetch water for their households, some without shoes on the hot dirt. We are working diligently to better their lives, but we can only progress as quickly as we receive funding. Each adult member of Hope for Orphans-Luuka works hard and long, giving what they can towards helping these children from their day jobs (and if you know anything of small village, Uganda incomes… you know how little that actually is). We are so grateful for our few friends who donate towards these causes. We hope you, too, will be inspired to help these children who deserve a future full of hope.
“Pure and undefiled religion before God and the Father is this: to visit orphans and widows in their trouble, and to keep oneself unspotted from the world.” James 1:27
A big thanks to our sponsors from these homes who had cried out for help! Bless you!
