Beatrice’s Story

About Beatrice:

Beatrice Nankya Michelle is 10 years old and an orphan who lost both her parents to HIV. She is the only surviving child of three and has been infected with HIV since birth. She currently lives with her grandmother Florence Kirya who is 50 years of age. Beatrice and her grandmother have no steady source of income and grow their own food to survive. Beatrice walks 5 km every day to get to school and 7 km to reach the medical center for treatment. She dreams of being a nurse one day.

The Need:

Beatrice needs to take antiretroviral (ARV) drugs every day and eat foods of high nutritious value to stay in good health. She is often sick and misses school regularly because of this. Her family needs financial support for her medical treatment and to access nutritious foods. A cow or goat would greatly help her family provide adequate nutrition for Beatrice. A mattress would also be a help as Beatrice has none now. What’s more, Beatrice struggles with the social stigma of HIV and is often shunned rather than encouraged and supported as she struggles with her health needs.
