Because there is no community well, and no money to buy clean water, Kagodo has to get water from a far away dirty water source. Kagodo can only fill his Jerry can half way or it will be too heavy for him to carry. So he makes several trips, twice a day.
The swamp water makes him sick. The water is dirty and filled with bacteria that can be terminal for a child like him. The water is also shared with animals more so the cows and other wild animals. “When we drink water from this dirty well, we get stomach problems” He says.
But he will be back again in few hours because there is nowhere else they can go for water. Dirt water is better than no water at all. So Kagodo and other community members make do. When they get sick, they simply wait for it to pass.
Dirty water isn’t the only danger here, Kagodo and their neighbors are competing with a deadly rival for this water, wild snakes.
These snakes are so dangerous, and in most cases they attack people. They kill people especially little ones.
The daily trip to collect water scares our children like Kagodo and others but we have no choice. A safer and cleaner water source, like a community well, would make all the difference.
Even though like in Luuka, Uganda is brutally hard, we still have HOPE. We hope for simple things that every child deserves. A chance to go to school. Decent clothes and shoes to wear more so our new children. Safe and clean water to drink. Medicine when they are sick and not to go to bed hungry.
You can help by providing these simple but essential things by sponsoring a child, becoming a monthly giver or even joining us as a volunteer. You can bring back the lost HOPE into a child’s life like Kagodo and help give them a whole new future: Click here to support our clean and safe drinking water campaign
