How Love and Rice Relate

Two years ago, in early 2016, Peruth Babirye woke to the harsh reality that her daddy was no longer. He has been killed by land wranglers, leaving behind his widow, Florence Mudondo and five children to fend for themselves in a beautiful, yet poverty ridden Uganda. This meant many changes for her family, as Peruth’s mother now had double the work load, very little land, and was left having to dig root vegetables at neighbors’ properties to be able to feed her children even while still grieving the loss of her late husband. Because of the level of poverty and the lack of any assistance, it is all too common for children to wind up in the terrible position of not only being unable to attend school (due to the lack of affordability), but having to help the family’s financial position by working low income jobs or even being sex trafficked.

When we first met Peruth and her family this month, she caught our eye and quickly became a favorite. She is such a sweet, obedient, precious child with a kind smile and good heart. She told us all about her daddy dying when she was just four-years-old and how she discovered her favorite food at his funeral. Rice! She had never tried it before or since that day. After accepting Peruth into the Hope For Orphans Organization-Luuka program (along with 3 other local children), we shared Peruth’s story with some of the kind people who occasionally make donations to our program. One of these lovely people sent enough for us to purchase a small bag of rice for Peruth.

We headed back out to the Namukubembe Village in Luuka district with the bag of rice, the same day we took all the corn to the children who had gone days without food (see previous story). When we presented Peruth with her bag of rice, she fell to her knee, smiling in happy surprise, saying, “Yeesu yeebale!” (Meaning, “Thank you so much, Jesus!”).

We are filled with joy over being able to bring hope to Peruth and share in her story, but it is also a reminder of how many others in the community of Luuka are suffering. Our goal at Hope for Orphans Organization is to work up to being able to accept 100 orphaned and/or vulnerable children into our program as God multiplies to us such amazing, committed, generous donors with hearts for these children. We are currently caring for 20 orphans and vulnerable children from around Busoga sub-region. We hope you’ll be a part of sponsoring these children and making it possible to help others!
